The Electoral Commission (EC) has announced that there are currently over 18.6 million registered voters on the register. The body has also recorded 778,447 new voters in the recent limited registration exercise. EC Chairperson, Jean Mensa, disclosed this information when she appeared before Parliament on the commission’s preparations for the upcoming December 7 polls.
According to her, a mop-up exercise is scheduled for Thursday, August 1, 2024, to Saturday, August 3, 2024, in all district offices and the newly created Guan district to ensure that all eligible voters are registered. She noted that the voter exhibition exercise has been rescheduled to August to accommodate this mop-up exercise.
The EC has also recruited 210,000 officials who will undergo training to effectively carry out their duties. The EC chair also highlighted that the Commission now has complete data on all recruited staff, ensuring better management and coordination.
She also announced the filing fees for both presidential and parliamentary candidates in the upcoming December 7 polls. She said the filling fee for the presidential election is GHS100,000 whiles the parliamentary candidates will pay GHS10,000. Mrs. Mensa added that will waive 25 per cent of the filing fees for women and Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) as part of efforts to encourage greater participation.
